FTCE Speech 6-12 Test

The FTCE Speech 6-12 Exam is divided into two sections. The first section comprises approximately 90 multiple-choice questions, and the second section requires you to create a videotaped speech presentation.

The multiple-choice section of the exam encompasses several core competencies, and each has between six and 12 skill areas. Core competencies are content knowledge areas, and the skills are the behaviors that demonstrate the competencies. Together, these competencies and skills represent the knowledge areas that content specialists have determined are important for beginning speech teachers.

Each competency is assigned a percentage representing the approximate proportion of test items in that content area relative to the total number of items on the exam.

You will demonstrate your knowledge of the following competencies:

  • Fundamentals of effective communication
  • The role of context in effective communication
  • Listening skills
  • Research skills
  • Message creation for public speaking
  • Message delivery for public speaking
  • Forensic events and techniques
  • Instructional techniques

For the multiple-choice portion, you will receive a test booklet with a separate answer sheet. Question formats include direct questions, commands, sentence completion, and scenarios. Each multiple-choice question has four answer options (A, B, C, or D). The answer sheet allows you to bubble in your response to each question.

For the presentation portion of the FTCE Speech 6-12 Exam, you will be provided with note cards, a pencil, and a pole speaker stand to prepare for the presentation. You will have to prepare and deliver a speech that has a unified message and which integrates verbal and nonverbal techniques.
