The FTCE Spanish K-12 Exam is divided into sections that test your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as your knowledge of pedagogy and Spanish linguistic structures, vocabulary, and culture. The overall exam encompasses about 90 questions and includes an essay component.
The questions in the listening and speaking sections of the FTCE Spanish K-12 Exam require the use of language laboratory equipment. Devices for recording responses will be provided in the test room. The recorded portion will be administered to all test candidates at the same time.
Listening and Comprehension
This section assesses your listening and comprehension skills. You will listen to recorded messages no longer than 3 minutes in length. These messages will be spoken in either formal or informal Spanish. Passages may be about a news item, short lecture, a report, dialogue, interview, or something similar.
After each passage is played, you will need to respond to between two and four questions, using the answer sheet provided. (Note: The passages and questions asked will not appear in the test booklet; however, the multiple-choice answer options will appear in Spanish.)
Speaking
For this portion of the FTCE Spanish K-12 Exam, responses must be in Spanish and will be recorded. This task requires you to respond to a scenario, example, situation, or statement. You must demonstrate appropriate knowledge in various areas of school, work, and everyday life, as well as Spanish culture, ideas, concepts, and topics.
Classroom Instruction (Speaking)
You will listen to a prompt in English. This prompt will also be printed in your test booklet. You have ten (10) seconds to prepare a response in Spanish and 20 seconds to record the directions that you would give to students.
For everyday situations, you will be asked to record in Spanish a description or the answer to a question. For each item, two or three topics will be presented in English (on the tape and in the test booklet). You will then have 15 seconds to select a topic and prepare a response, then 60 seconds to record the response.
Scoring guidelines range from 1 to 6, with 1 being the lowest and 6 demonstrating polished pronunciation and correct grammar.
When you arrive for the FTCE Spanish K-12 Exam, you will receive a test booklet and an answer booklet. The answer booklet includes lined paper for the essay section and an answer sheet for bubbling in your responses to the multiple-choice questions. Each multiple-choice question has four response options (A, B, C, or D).
