FTCE Professional Education Test

The FTCE Professional Education Exam has approximately 120 multiple-choice questions that test your knowledge in several content areas. Question formats include direct questions, sentence completion, commands, and scenarios. Each question has four answer options (A, B, C, or D).

The exam encompasses several core competencies, or content knowledge areas, and each one has between two and seven skill areas. The skills are behaviors that demonstrate your understanding of each competency. Together, these competencies and skills are representative of knowledge that has been determined by content specialists to be important for beginning teachers.

The FTCE Professional Education Exam requires you to demonstrate your knowledge of the following:

  • Various types of strategies available to assess student levels and needs (Assessment)
  • Effective communication with students, parents, faculty, other professionals, and the public, including those whose home language is not English (Communications)
  • Strategies for continuous improvement in professional practices for self and school (Continuous Improvement)
  • Strategies, materials, and technologies to promote and enhance critical and creative thinking skills (Critical Thinking)
  • Cultural, linguistic, and learning style differences and how these differences impact classroom practice and student learning (Diversity)

Each competency is assigned a percentage that reflects the proportion of test items in that content area on the test compared to the total number of items on the exam.

When you arrive for the FTCE Professional Education Exam, you will receive a test booklet with a separate answer sheet for bubbling in your response to each question.
