FTCE Physical Education K-12 Test

The Florida teacher certification exam for Physical Education K-12 encompasses 12 core competencies, each with between two and 12 skill areas. Core competencies are defined as areas of content knowledge, with skills being the behaviors that demonstrate each competency. Together, the competencies and skills represent the knowledge areas that content specialists have determined are important for beginning physical education teachers.

You will need to demonstrate knowledge in each of the following core competencies:

  • The history and philosophy of physical education as a profession
  • Curricular theory and development
  • Instructional strategies
  • Human growth, motor development, and motor learning related to physical activity
  • Skill and movement principles in physical activity
  • Health and wellness and its relationship to physical activity
  • Principles of social and emotional development through physical activity
  • Developmentally appropriate assessment
  • Supervision, management, and laws and legislation that apply to the learning environment
  • Appropriate rules, strategies, and terminology
  • Professional development and advocacy strategies
  • Technology

The FTCE Physical Education K-12 Exam has approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Question formats include direct questions, sentence completion, data analysis, commands, and scenarios. Each question has four answer options (A, B, C, or D). Each core competency is assigned a percentage that represents the approximate proportion of items in that content area on the exam. You will receive both a test booklet and a bubble answer sheet.
