The FTCE Middle Grades General Science 5-9 Exam comprises approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Question formats include direct questions, sentence completion, graphics, commands, and scenarios. Each question has four possible answer options, (A, B, C, or D).
These questions cover content knowledge in nine core competencies, and each competency covers between four and 18 skill areas that demonstrate the requisite knowledge. These core competencies and skills are representative of the knowledge that has been determined by content specialists to be important for beginning teachers of general science in grades five through nine.

Each of the above competencies is assigned a percentage, which reflects the number of test items in that content area compared to the total number of items on the exam.
