The FTCE Middle Grades Mathematics 5-9 Exam has about 80 multiple-choice questions encompassing nine core competencies.
Each core competency, or area of content knowledge, has between three and 25 skill areas. Content specialists have determined that these core competencies and skills are representative of the knowledge that beginning teachers of middle grade mathematics should have. Each competency is assigned a percentage that represents the approximate proportion of items in that content area compared to the total number of test items.
