FTCE Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum Test

The FTCE Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum Exam is divided into four sections: English, General Science, Mathematics, and Social Science. Each section of the exam tests several core competencies, or content knowledge and skills related to each competency. Together, the core competencies and skills represent the knowledge areas that content specialists have determined are important for beginning teachers.

The FTCE Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum Exam comprises approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Question formats include direct questions, sentence completion, data analysis, commands, and scenarios. Each question has four response options (A, B, C, or D). You will receive a test booklet and a separate answer sheet on which to bubble in your response to each question.

Each core competency on the FTCE Middle Grades Integrated Curriculum Exam is assigned a percentage representing the approximate proportion of test items in that content area on the test. The sections and their core competencies are as follows:

  • English: This section of the exam comprises four core competencies, each containing between two and seven skill areas. You need to demonstrate knowledge in the following:
    • Written and oral language
    • Reading
    • Literature
    • Teaching of language arts to middle grade students
  • General Science: This section comprises four core competences, each with between four and ten skill areas. You need to demonstrate knowledge in the following:
    • The nature of science
    • Living things and their environment
    • The forces of Earth and space
    • Matter and energy
  • Mathematics: This section contains five core competencies, each with between four and eight skill areas. The competencies are:
    • Number sense, concepts, and operations
    • Data analysis and probability
    • Algebra
    • Geometry
    • Measurement
  • Social Science: This section contains six core competencies, each with between six and nine skill areas. You will need to demonstrate knowledge of:
    • Geography
    • Economics
    • World history
    • Political history
    • US history
    • Social science methodology
