The FTCE Middle Grades English 5-9 Exam has two parts: a multiple-choice section containing approximately 85 questions and an essay section. The exam tests content knowledge in six core competencies: (1) characteristics of middle grade students as related to the teaching and learning of integrated language arts; (2) research and current issues in teaching integrated language arts; (3) literacy in the integrated language arts; (4) content and strategies for teaching integrated language arts; (5) assessment of integrated language arts; and (6) the ability to write well on a given topic.
Each competency has between two and nine skill areas. Content specialists have determined that these are representative of the knowledge and skills that are important for beginning teachers to have. Each core competency is assigned a percentage, which represents the approximate number of items in that area compared to the total number of items on the test.
You will receive two booklets: A test booklet containing the test questions and choice of essay topics, and an answer booklet that includes a bubble answer sheet and lined paper for the essay response.
Each multiple choice question has four possible answer options (A, B, C, or D). The question formats include direct questions, sentence completion, commands, and scenarios. To respond to each question, bubble in the letter for the answer option on the answer sheet.
