FTCE Hearing Impaired K-12 Test
The FTCE Hearing Impaired K-12 Exam covers a wide range of topics in 14 core competencies. Each competency tests knowledge and skill in two to 12 skill areas. Content specialists have determined that these competencies, or areas of content knowledge, and their associated skills are important for teachers of the hearing impaired. Each competency is assigned a percentage representing the approximate proportion of test items in that content area on the test.
To pass the FTCE Hearing Impaired K-12 Exam, you will answer questions that gauge your knowledge of the following core competencies:
- The auditory mechanism and hearing loss and its impact upon communication and learning
- Language development and methods of communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Philosophical, historical, and legal foundations and their impact on the education of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Psychosocial aspects of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Deaf and family cultures and their impact on students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Service delivery models for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- The design, development, and implementation of Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSPs), and Transition Individual Educational Plans (TIEPs)
- Transitional services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Assessments appropriate for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Instructional strategies and modifications for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Unique technologies, media, and resources for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- Content design and requirements for general education
- Professional communication, advocacy, and collaboration to meet the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing
- The ability to comprehend signing (This portion of the exam requires you to watch a video of an individual signing in American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), and English-based signs and then to select the correct responses to the questions.)
The FTCE Hearing Impaired K-12 Exam comprises approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Question formats will include direct questions, sentence completion, commands, and scenarios. Each question has four response options (A, B, C, or D). You will receive a test booklet and a separate answer sheet for bubbling in your responses to the questions.
