FTCE Health Test

The FTCE Health K-12 Exam is required for beginning health teachers. Questions in 14 core competencies will assess your knowledge and skills on a variety of topics. Each core competency includes between two and eight skill areas.

The 14 core competencies that content specialists have determined are required of beginning health teachers include:

  • Foundation, theories, and principles of health education
  • Health education standards and practice
  • Personal health and wellness principles
  • Anatomy, physiology, diseases, and disorders
  • Family systems
  • Social and emotional development
  • Nutritional theory and fitness
  • Mental and emotional health disorders
  • Substance use, abuse, and addiction, and other addictive behaviors
  • Violence prevention
  • Consumer health-related practices
  • Environmental health and the community
  • Injury prevention
  • Media influences on health

The FTCE Health K-12 Exam comprises approximately 120 multiple-choice questions, with four answer options (A, B, C, or D). Question formats include direct questions, commands, sentence completion, and scenarios. Each of the above competencies is assigned a percentage, which reflects the proportion of test items in each competency compared to the total number of items on the exam. You will receive a test booklet and separate bubble answer sheet for your responses.
