To pass the FTCE French K-12 Exam, you must demonstrate knowledge and skills in six core competencies. Each core competency contains between two and seven skill areas. Content specialists have determined these competencies and skills to be representative of knowledge areas that are important for beginning French teachers. Each competency on the exam is assigned a percentage for scoring purposes. This percentage represents the approximate proportion of items in that competency compared to the overall total number of test items.
The FTCE French K-12 Exam will test your knowledge of the following core competencies: (1) communication (performance) of oral and written language fluency; (2) communication in listening and understanding and interpreting written French; (3) cultures; (4) sociolinguistic patterns through comparisons of English and French; (5) linguistic patterns; and (6) pedagogy.
The FTCE French K-12 Exam has three sections and encompasses approximately 90 questions.
Speaking
This section tests your French pronunciation and grammar. You will be provided with scenarios and your verbal responses (in French) will be recorded. You are expected to be able to respond to a variety of topics that demonstrate appropriate knowledge in various areas of school, work, and everyday life, as well as French culture, ideas, and topics. Scoring guidelines for each question range from 1 to 6, with 1 being the lowest possible score and 6 the highest score, reflecting correct grammar and polished pronunciation.
Listening and Comprehension
This section tests your listening and comprehension skills. You will listen to pre-recorded passages, each lasting no more than three minutes. Some messages will be spoken using formal French, and others informal French.
After each passage is played, you will have to answer the multiple-choice questions related to that passage. Each passage will be associated with two to four questions. Question formats will include reading comprehension and vocabulary, culture, language structures and linguistics, and pedagogy. Each question will have four answer options (A, B, C, or D).
Writing
The writing section requires you to write a 150-word essay in French. You will respond to an assigned topic that presents culture, information, or ideas. Writing task instructions will be provided in English.
Two reviewers will rate the essay on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and indicating unacceptable use of French. A score of 5 is the highest possible and reflects superiority and a strong command of French. Essays that are too short or contain excessive repetition will receive a rating of 3 or lower. An essay that is off-topic will automatically receive a rating of 1.
For the FTCE French K-12 Exam, you will receive a test booklet and a separate answer booklet. The answer booklet includes lined paper for the essay and a bubble answer sheet for the multiple-choice questions.
