FTCE Florida Educational Leadership Test

The Florida Educational Leadership Exam is required for those planning to become school principals. In order to pass this exam, you must demonstrate knowledge and skills in several core competencies that are aligned with the state's Principal Leadership Standards.

You are expected to demonstrate core competency knowledge and skills in various content areas. Content specialists have determined that these competencies, or areas of content knowledge and skill, are important for becoming an administrative school leader. Each core competency receives a score percentage that reflects the proportion of test items within that area compared to the total number of items on the exam.

The Florida Educational Leadership Exam is broken into three sections, which cover ten identified standards and related competencies and skills expected of school leaders. The three sections are as follows: Instructional Leadership, Operational Leadership, and School Leadership.

The Instructional and Operational Leadership sections each comprise approximately 65 multiple-choice questions. Each of these two sections must be completed within two hours (four hours total). Multiple-choice question formats include direct questions, commands, sentence completion, and scenarios. Each question will have four possible response options (A, B, C, or D).

The School Leadership section includes approximately 50-60 multiple-choice questions and a written performance assessment. This section must be completed within 2.5 hours. Allow up to 6.5 hours to complete the total exam. You will have morning and afternoon sessions to complete the Florida Educational Leadership Exam.

You will receive a test booklet with a separate answer booklet. The test booklet includes space for composing and editing your draft for the written performance assessment. The answer booklet includes lined paper for composing the final version of your written performance assessment, as well as an answer sheet for bubbling in your response to each multiple-choice question.
