FTCE English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 Test

The FTCE English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 Exam tests knowledge and skill in 11 core competencies. Each core competency contains between three and 13 skill areas. Competencies are defined as areas of content knowledge, with skills being the behaviors that demonstrate that knowledge. Content specialists have determined these competencies and skills to be representative of knowledge areas that are important for beginning ESOL teachers.

To pass the FTCE ESOL K-12 Exam, you will need to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following core competencies: (1) heritage language and English language principles; (2) first and second language acquisition theories and classroom application; (3) sociolinguistic, cultural, ethnic, and sociopolitical issues; (4) curriculum, curriculum materials, and resources; (5) instructional models; (6) instructional methods and strategies; (7) instructional technology; (8) literacy development and classroom application; (9) assessment; (10) exceptional student education (ESE) issues related to English Language Learners (ELLs); and (11) federal and state mandates.

Each competency on the exam is assigned a percentage for scoring purposes. This percentage represents the approximate proportion of competency test items in that content area compared to the overall total number of items on the test.

The FTCE English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 Exam includes approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Possible question formats include: direct questions, commands, sentence completion, and scenarios. Each question will have four possible response options (A, B, C, or D). You will receive a test booklet with a separate answer sheet, on which to bubble in your responses.
