This percentage represents the approximate proportion of competency items in that content area compared to the overall total number of test items.

The core competencies on this exam include the following: (1) the English language and methods for effective teaching; (2) writing and methods for effective teaching; (3) use of the reading process to construct meaning from a wide range of selections; (4) literature and methods for effective teaching; (5) listening, viewing, and speaking as methods for acquiring critical literacy; (6) methods for integration of the language arts; and (7) ability to write well on a selection from poetry or prose, including fiction or nonfiction.

The FTCE English 6-12 Exam comprises two parts. The first part includes approximately 85 multiple-choice questions, and the second part is an essay.
