FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Test
The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Exam comprises five sections: Language Arts and Reading; Social Science; Physical Education, Health, Music, and Visual Arts; Science and Technology; and Mathematics.
Each section of the exam contains several core competencies and skill areas. These core competencies are designed to determine your knowledge and skills in each major subject and content area.
The five sections are:
Language Arts and Reading
This section has six core competencies, each with between four and 11 skill areas. These competencies include (1) emergent literacy; (2) reading; (3) the process of constructing meaning from a variety of texts; (4) literature; (5) writing; and (6) use of reading assessments.
- Social Science
This section comprises five core competencies, each with between two and 11 skill areas. The five competencies are (1) history-time, continuity, and change; (2) geography-people, places, and environment; (3) government and civics; (4) economics-production, distribution, and consumption; and (5) instruction and assessment of the social sciences.
- Physical Education, Health, Music, and Visual Arts
This section includes nine core competencies, each with between two and six skill areas. Test-takers will need to demonstrate knowledge of the following: (1) personal health and wellness; (2) physical, social, and emotional growth and development; (3) community health and safety issues; (4) subject content and appropriate curriculum design; (5) skills and techniques in music and visual arts; (6) creation and communication in music and visual arts; (7) cultural and historical connections in music and visual arts; (8) aesthetic and critical analysis of music and visual arts; and (9) appropriate assessment strategies in music and visual arts.
- Science and Technology
This section comprises nine core competencies, each with between two and ten skill areas. The competencies include: (1) the nature of matter; (2) forces, motion, and energy; (3) processes that shape the Earth; (4) Earth and space; (5) the processes of life; (6) how living things interact with the environment; (7) the nature and history of science; (8) the relationship of science and technology; and (9) technology processes and applications.
- Mathematics
This section contains six core competencies, each with between three and nine skill areas. Test-takers will demonstrate knowledge of (1) number sense, concepts, and operations; (2) measurement; (3) geometry and spatial sense; (4) algebraic thinking; (5) data analysis and probability; and (6) instruction and assessment.
Taking the FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Exam
Test-takers will have morning and afternoon sessions to complete the examination. This test includes the following question types: direct questions; sentence completion; charts, graphs, and maps; commands; and scenarios. Each question will have four possible response options. Test-takers will receive a test booklet with a separate answer sheet, on which the test-taker will bubble in the correct multiple-choice response (A, B, C, or D).
Results
As the number of questions may vary slightly between exam forms, the actual number of correct answers needed may also vary. As a result, the Florida Department of Education can only provide general guidelines about how many answers must be correct in order to pass. Scores will be available between two to four weeks after the test date.
