FTCE Chemistry 6-12 Test

The FTCE Chemistry 6-12 Exam tests knowledge and skill in eight core competencies. Each core competency contains between five and 21 skill areas. Competencies are defined as areas of content knowledge, with skills as the behaviors that demonstrate that knowledge. Content specialists have determined these competencies and skills to be representative of knowledge areas that are important for beginning chemistry teachers.

Test-takers will demonstrate knowledge of (1) the nature of matter; (2) energy and its interaction with matter; (3) bonding and molecular structure; (4) reactions and stoichiometry; (5) atomic theory and structure; (6) the nature of science; (7) measurement; and (8) appropriate laboratory use and procedures.

Each competency on the exam is assigned a percentage for scoring purposes. This percentage represents the approximate proportion of competency test items in that content area compared to the overall total number of items on the test.

The FTCE Chemistry 6-12 Exam comprises approximately 100 multiple-choice questions. The format includes the following question types: direct questions, commands, sentence completion, graphics, and scenarios. Each question will have four possible response options. Test-takers will receive a test booklet with a separate answer sheet, on which the test-taker will bubble in the correct multiple-choice response (A, B, C, or D). Test-takers will also receive a reference sheet and scientific calculator. (Personal calculators may not be brought to the examination.)
